Forest walker: the Forests of Frandem...
You will meet many strangers along the way...but who can you trust?
You have been walking for some time. Your clothes are wet and you have no idea where the others are. As you look around at the forest clearing and curse silently that it all looks the same. You have no idea if you are heading North, which would lead you back to the base of the mountains. Frustrated, you hold you head in your hands. It will soon be night and you have no food or water. Then, as you glance around, the dipping sun catches a shiny object in the leaves. As you stoop down to examine it you realise there is a tiny brass key in the bushes. Do you [[pick it up]], using up valuable space in your satchel, or [[leave it?]]You pick up the key. It feels warm - someone must have dropped it recently. But you don't recognise it as belonging to any of the others. Your voice is hoarse from calling, but no one has responded for hours. You realise that you have to keep moving. It's dangerous out here, so you put the key in your satchel. Do you continue [[walking]] or [[forage around]] to see if there is anything else? You decide to leave the key behind, and continue. There's clearly nothing for the key to open out here, and you need to keep space in your satchel for food and water...if you should find any. Going deeper into the forest you see a strange tree with large pulsating fruit on it. As you approach it you notice it's feint floral smell. You've never seen anything like it before. Do you [[pick the fruit]], or leave it and [[continue walking]]?As you continue walking, it becomes clear that the air is starting to feel cold. In the distance you hear a strange moaning. The sky is turning an inky black and the three blood moons of Frandem are beginning to appear. Do you keep following the sight line of the moons high above the forest? They are starting to [[glow red]] indicating the first part of the night is upon you, or do [[forage around]] to see what else you might find?As you reach up and grab at a fruit its pulsing skin gives way and your fingers squish through into warm flesh. The fruit lets out a blood-curdling scream that fills the forest air. Startled you jump back, your hand is coated in a viscous yellow fluid. Do you [[try another fruit]], or leave the tree and [[continue walking]] passed it?Looking around you reach out to another fruit. Your fingers barely touch the skin and the fruit lets out an almighty wail. You are startled again. Do you try [[another fruit]], or leave this part of the forest. This tree clearly doesn't want its fruit to be picked. You can [[continue walking]] into the forest? Now reaching up your fingers barely touch the skin of the fruit when it lets out an almighty wail. You are startled, again. Do you [[reach for another fruit]], or leave and [[continue walking]] into the forest?Determined, you reach for a third fruit. Before you even make contact, this one lets out a deep gurgle, and then is dawns on you - you have stumbled across a Tree of Lost Souls. Taking a step back, do you [[pose a question]] to the gurgling fruit or [[keep walking]]?You ask: “Tell me Tree of Lost Souls, how can I get out of this [[forest]]?” As if awakening a chorus, the fruits start to breathe in unison and as they come to life their collective voices talk back to you. “You must follow the cave river and head into the gorge. There you will meet a [[troll]] who knows the way". Tell him “Alumeena loves him. I am his wife and died after I was chased into the gorge. Tell him I hid his bell in our drinking well just before I was pushed into the [[gem mine]].”You thank Alumeena and as you turn to walk away, she speaks again. “Friend, what do I get in return for this advice?” Do you reach into your [[satchel]] to see what you have, or [[keep walking]]?The red moons will soon change colour indicating 16 hours of blackness before the flares of the Ultarian Star reach the planet again. You walk for some time when further off in the forest darkness you begin to notice a small yellow light. As you get closer you realise it is coming from inside a small shed. Do you head towards the [[shed]] or decide to stop and [[forage around]]?You approach the shed and knock on the door. There is no answer. You try the door and it is locked. You peer inside a nearby window and realise that the light is a [[welcoming fire]]. On the table are two steaming bowls of soup. You haven't eaten for hours and you would welcome some food. But where are the people?Reaching into your satchel you feel the key. It was warm when you found it. Perhaps the person dropped it recently. Would they welcome you into their home, or be hostile? You wonder what you should do. Do you [[try the key]] in the door, or look around for [[another way into the shed]]?As you continue walking, it becomes clear that the air is starting to feel cold. In the distance you hear a strange moaning. The sky is turning an inky black and the three blood moons of Frandem are [[beginning to glow red]]. The red moons will soon change colour indicating 16 hours of blackness before the flares of the Ultarian Star reach the planet again. You slide the key into the lock, trying to make as little noise as possible. The key fits easily and as you turn it, you hear the catch snap open. As you peer inside you realise no one is around. So you step inside the shed and close the door behind you. As the door swings shut you realise there is no handle or keyhole on the inside. You start to panic. Was this a trap. You look around at the simple table and chairs. There are some empty shelves and besides the stove, the shed looks empty. But at least the fire has made for a [[warm room]]...Maybe you can stay long enough for your clothes to dry...You walk around the shed and in the darkness you see and hear a moaning shadow coming towards you. Do you [[call out]], or [[turn and run]]?“Hello, Sir?” you call. There is no response and the looming shadow is getting larger. You feel a shiver run down your spine. Do you [[wait for the shadow]] to get closer, or [[turn and run]]?As you turn, your feet get caught in the undergrowth. You stumble and realise that you've fallen into a pit. You hear the shadow beast above you but realise that it is moving away. Standing up you start to pad the walls of the pit. Do you try and [[climb out]] or keep feeling the [[dank walls]]?
You walk for some time, pulling at vines with your bare hands, and ducking under huge branches from the ancient tree. It is some time before further off in the forest darkness you begin to notice a small yellow light. It doesn't seem likely that anyone would live in this place, but could it be a member of your group? As you get closer you realise the light is coming from [[inside a shed]].You approach the shed and knock on the door. There is no answer. You try the door and it is locked. You peer inside a nearby window and realise that the light is a welcoming fire. By now the air is cold and you haven't eaten for hours. On the table are two steaming bowls of what appears to be soup. You decide to look for [[another way into the shed]].Now the shadow is up close and you realise you can see through it. It is breathing and smells of decay. Frozen in fear you feel a sudden tightness around your neck. Do you [[reach up]] and fight back, or [[relax and see what happens]]?As you reach up your hands pass through the shadow beast, your feet feel leaden, and as the grip gets tighter you feel your body slumps to the ground as [[you lose consciousness]].As you relax the shadow beast's grip lessen and it steps back. Clearly it felt threatened by your presence, but now you have shown that you mean it no harm it appears to be leading you somewhere. Do you [[follow]], or [[turn away]]?When you awaken your head feels groggy. You find yourself inside a makeshift wooden cage. Your heart is racing and you start to panic. It is dark all around you, but from the smell and what you can just about make out, you realise that you are in a cave. The air is damp and in the distance you can hear slow running water. As your eyes adjust further to the darkness you realise that there is a hammer a little way off and next to it a pile of rocks. Do reach for the [[hammer]], or the [[rocks]]? Stretching up you grab at some roots to haul yourself out of the pit. As your head emerges you realise the shadow beast is looming over you. It grabs at your neck and you feel yourself getting light-headed as [[you lose consciousness]].
Padding at the mud you reach out at some roots and realise there is a low tunnel that appears to wind off underground. Do you [[enter the tunnel]] or try and [[climb out]]?Ferreting around in your bag you find a bag of seeds, a small knife and a book. Do you [[offer any of these items]] to Alumeena, or decide to turn away and [[keep walking]]?The tree starts to wail and shriek behind you, and in the distance you hear another angry wailing in response. You start to run before Alumeena gives away your location. It [[doesn’t feel safe]].Do you hold up the [[knife]], the [[book]] or the bag of [[seeds]] as a parting gift?As you hold up the knife Alumeena lets out a snort of derision. “What use do I have with a knife, traveler!” With this the tree starts to shudder. Do you try the bag of [[seeds]] or the [[book]], or [[keep walking]]?As you hold up the book Alumeena lets out an angry gurgling. “Foolish traveler! How does your book help me?” With this the tree starts to tremble vigorously as though trying to uproot itself. Do you try the [[seeds]], or the [[knife]] or [[keep walking]]? As you hold up the seeds Alumeena lets out a gentle laugh. Seeds planted around a Tree of Lost Souls allow trapped souls to enter the new plants and free themselves. She thanks you and bids you a [[safe journey]].As you journey on you come to another clearing. Looking up at the moons, they have started to change colour and you feel certain that you have been heading East. It is now deep night and the air is chilly. You outstretch your hands to feel your way around the area - besides the occasional light from an insect, the night is deathly black. Fumbling around you feel your way further into the [[darkness]]...Your heart is racing as you start to run. It is getting dark and you can hear one wailing tree getting closer, then two, then three. Suddenly you realise the forest around you has gotten denser. You are surrounded by Trees of Lost Souls. You feel stifled and as your listless body falls to the ground your mind fades to black. The last thing the flashes through you mind is "...damn this forest...how did I ever find myself here..."
THE END
There is more to this adventure...if you're willing to enter the forest again...Did you meet the ranger, Taskia?
To continue this journey, e-mail me at rajendrashepherd@hotmail.com I would love to hear your thoughts on this story, and suggestions of what would challenge you most in the heart of the Forests of Frandem... Walking into the darkness you find yourself at the mouth of a cave. As you peer inside you see an empty wooden cage and notice three tunnels leading off deeper inside. Do you enter [[the left tunnel]] that has a tiny stream running through it, [[the middle tunnel]] that is sandy, or [[the right tunnel]], which has a feint set of footprints at its mouth? You look around the simple shed. Hungry, you contemplate if to eat the soup. Clearly someone was just here...who were they expecting? There is one old spoon on the table and the two bowls next to each other. You pull a chair and sit down. Do you eat from bowl [[one]] or [[two]]?
As you follow, the beast appears to be taking you back into the forest that looks familiar. You start to wonder if you'll ever get out. Do you [[trust the shadow beast]] or decide to [[turn away]]?As you turn to head back, you feel the beast's breath hot on your skin and its grip on your neck again. This time you try to relax, but you feel it tightening. As your mind starts to slow your breathing stops and [[you lose consciousness]].Exhausted you decide you should see where the beast is leading you. As you turn you feel its heavy form against your back. You try to [[turn and run]] but you cannot force yourself away from its humongous presence...As the thick soup hits your mouth, your throat starts to tingle. You realise it is laden with poison nettle and you can feel your heart start to slow. As your mind starts to blur you feel your knees get leaden and seated at the table [[you lose consciousness]].The warm soup is inviting and as you slurp it down the air around you starts to hum. Distracted, you look up and squinting, the shape of a beautiful woman starts to form before you. You jump from your seat, but the woman's face is inviting and you feel strangely at peace. She waves her hand over the table as though gesturing for you to continue eating. Do you eat from bowl [[one]] or [[stop eating]]?As you focus on her face you realise she is speaking, but the sound of her voice is inside your head. "I am Anguineth, a forest elemental, trapped in this house to lure lost travellers. If you don't leave soon you won't escape the forest," she says. Hearing this your heart quickens. She sounds so genuine. Do you [[trust her]] or decide to fill yourself up and eat from bowl [[one]] before you leave? Her form starts to solidify and as it does you can now hear her speaking in the shed. She explains that she has the power to transport you before a 'special tree', and points to the stove. As you approach to examine it, you see a torn corner of paper on the counter with some writing on it. It reads: "7, 5, 22". You pick it up and slide it into your satchel. The elemental begins to drift toward you and as she stretches out her hand you instinctively reach for it. As your fingers touch hers your body suddenly feels light. In an instant a brilliant light flares blooms before you and when you can see again, you are back in the forest. You can smell a feint floral smell in the dark of the night. As you look around you realise you are standing near an odd tree with strange pulsating purple fruit. Still hungry you reach up to [[pick the fruit]]. You slide your body into the tunnel and it starts to narrow, but as you push through the soft earth you realise the air is starting to smell cleaner. After some time you come to a fork. Do you turn [[left]] or [[right]]?Pushing further into the tunnel it starts to widen, till eventually you can stand up easily. There are roots growing out of the walls of the tunnel. As you feel your way through the darkness you start to notice the floor start to crunch. An uneasy feel comes over you as you realise you are walking on decaying bones. Who are these people? Surely they can't be others from your village. You decide to turn back toward the mouth of the pit and turn [[right]]...
Wending your way further into the muddy tunnel, you suddenly feel something pulling hard against your ankles. As you feel yourself pulled back you realise the shadow beast has followed you into the pit. Frantic you begin gasping for air, and as you start to panic [[you lose consciousness]].As you stretch out your hand, your fingers creep forward just managing to grasp the handle of the hammer. You edge it towards you and pull it into the cage. With a hefty swing you manage to bang the locking pin out of the latch with a clang as the cage swings open. You clamber out of the cage and look around at the three tunnels ahead of you. Do you follow [[tunnel 1]] that has a tiny stream running through it, [[tunnel 2]] that is sandy, or [[tunnel 3]], which has a feint set of footprints at its mouth? Pushing your hand through the spaces you reach for the rocks. As you do so they start to tumble down a short slope making a banging sound as they hit the rock face. The noise alerts a shadowy beast who is now looming over your cage. It reaches in and places its cold hands around your neck. As your breathing begins to slow, the last though that crosses your mind is "...damn, how the hell did I find myself in this forsaken forest..." It looks like you made a very bad move somewhere along the way...

The clearing is bordered by a ring of trees and as you peer into the darkness you see a shape dart into the growth. As you step closer to take a look you feel an arm sweep round behind and grab you into a choke hold. As you crane you neck you realise it is a woman ranger. Do you [[try to free yourself]] or [[attempt to reason]] with her? Digging around at the root of the bushes, among the leaves you find yourself uprooting some tiny unfamiliar plants. As you do so, something grips hard on your finger. It feels like a tiny animal and you're suddenly not sure what to do. Do you [[pull away]] or [[push forward]] to see if it will release its grip?As you snatch your hand back to see what happens the tiny barbs that had ensnared your finger in break the surface of your skin and you start to feel light-headed. You realise that a lethal toxin has entered your blood. This plant may well have been important, but as this thought lolls its ways through your slowing mind the world starts to fade away and [[you lose consciousness]].Pushing your finger further the sharp edges release themselves and you realise these were barbs from a plant. This plant could be important. Do you put your finger into its grip again, and this time [[pull away]] or ignore it and follow the moons that are starting to [[glow red]]?Following the stream you head off deeper into the cave. The air is cool and as your eyes begin to adjust to the darkness you realise tiny flecks of light from glowing insects. The walls are thick with moss. After some time you notice the stream becoming shallow. Your legs are beginning to feel tired and your mouth dry. Do you [[stop to drink some water]] or [[decide to keep going]]?

As the stream continues on you come to a wide bank where you see the well that Alumeena had spoken of. You peer into it and it appears to be dry, but you know that she hid her troll husband's bell inside it. A little way on you notice a burrow in the wall a little way off the ground. You decide to take a look at find a short piece of old rope and a plank of wood. You take them back to the well and try to figure out your next move. Do you [[tie the rope and wood together]] or continue to [[search other burrows]]?

The stream continues on, you pass a well that appears to be dry, and at some point you start to notice the walls appearing smoother. This appears to be the work of human hands. Every so often you notice a burrow some way into the tunnel, but each one appears relatively shallow and of little consequence. You continue for what feels like over an hour before you feel your thighs start to feel heavy. You have to find something to eat soon or you're never going to make it out of here alive...

You drop to your knees and leaning forward you heft the ranger over your head. She is agile and flips herself back onto her feet. She is breathing hard and stretches swiftly for her bow and reaches into her quiver for a red-tipped arrow. Do you [[duck]] or [[lunge at the ranger]]?She fires the arrow. You duck and it narrowly misses the top of your head. The ranger is nimble and has another arrow lined up. Do you [[reach into your satchel]] or begin [[hand to hand combat]]?As you lunge at the ranger, she darts to a side. She twists around you and suddenly you feel a sharp stabbing in your side. As you mind starts to drift you hear the ranger's muffled laugh around you. Your vision blurs and you see two, then four images of the ranger swaying before you. All you are able to do is [[slump to the ground]]..."Ranger. Stop! I mean you no harm," you call. Her grip tightens, but as you slow your breathing and relax you realise that she is willing to talk. "Forest walker," she says "what brings you to this part of the woods?" she asks. You begin to [[explain your story]]...You feel for your knife and quickly brandish it. She fires her arrow, which misses you. As it flies passed you the ranger lurches forward, and as she does, she slips. She lets out a scream and then a deep gurgle as her blood flows down your hand. She recoils and slumps to the floor. You decide to [[search her]]...
You ball your hands into fists and attempt to punch a blow to the ranger's body, but she is nimble and easily avoids your attacks. You are hungry and exhausted and the lack of food makes you an easy target. The ranger is quickly upon you and although a fraction of your weight she has your hands pinned to the damp earth. Do you push up and [[try and free yourself]] or [[submit to her]]?Padding her pockets you find a leather pouch filled with gems and a small metal flask filled with liquid. You put the items into your satchel and look around for an exit. The ring of trees is dense but the ranger must have come from somewhere. Do you head further [[east]] into the dense forest or make your way [[south]] toward the marshlands? Westward the forest stretches out into the darkness. Without a torch you quickly find yourself against a wall of trees of varying strengths, some of them as old as the forest itself. As you contemplate your surroundings your heart feels heavy. Exhausted and hungry there's little you can do right now. With you mind on what might lie at the edge of the forest you decide to take a moment's rest. But that moment stretches out into the darkness, and as your breathing gets slow you barely even notice that you have drifted off into a peaceful sleep. Who knows what will greet you when you wake...

You explain that you are from the outskirts of Frandem, over the mountain ridge, and got lost at the edge of the of the forest. You want to know the way to the marshlands. With that the ranger's eyes narrow, and as you straighten upright she darts forward and you feel a sharp stabbing pain in your side. Your vision blurs and you hear the ranger's laughter ringing in your ears as you [[slump to the ground]]... With the toxin coursing through your blood, your mind starts to play tricks on you. Large shadow beasts loom up around you and you feel yourself stifling. Images of your home over the Northern mountains flash across your mind, you see a family, and then a troll. If you were conscious, you would have witnessed the ranger, Taskia, binding your hands and feet, and placing a loop around the binding, seen your body being dragged off somewhere. But you can't see this, and in your dreamy state, the world around is completely absent. But what is going to become of you? Where will you end up? And will you ever escape the Forests of Frandem?

She explains that she has a camp nearby and can offer you food and shelter for the night. Do you agree to [[follow her]] or decide to [[continue alone]]? The ranger says: "My name is Taskia" and I have a camp a short way off. Taskia pulls a small lamp from pack and lights it with a flint. She leads the way though the dense forest. To the East is a series of caves. To the West the forest stretches out for as far as you can see, and the to the North you see the Yapatunka mountain range.
